Getting more from your stamps

Good afternoon - I've been hanging on in the hope of daylight coming to Sheffield, but it looks like were set for second solid day of fog and drizzle, so I've given up and used artificial light so forgive the poor photography.

I wanted to play with the new fabulous large Christmas words in the massive new stamp set from Winnie and Walter - The Big, the Bold and Merry and I've done two takes on it one black, and one white, both using stamps in ways other than the makers intended.

I began with black and just some simple white embossing of words from the set onto some black shimmer card, and I teamed it with a simple image from the Joy to the World set from Avery Elle.

The Santa and reindeer image is actually designed to curve around the globes in the Joy to the World set but it is very easy to change the curve to get more out of your stamps.   I added a shining star from A Blessed Christmas from Paper Smooches which is now back in stock and one teeny-tiny hint of colour with a spot of red glitter for Rudolph's nose.

I was then inspired by the globes in Joy to the World and the lovely large "peace" word and came up with something a little different.

As all the globes in the set have words on, it would have been hard to pair them with the large words I wanted to be my focal feature, but I really love the stand of the globe so I just made my own world!   I turned one of the globe images over (the "wrong" side of a stamp will still cling to your acrylic block) and I inked the whole of the back with a light blue dye ink and stamped it.  I cleaned the back and then selectively "splodged" some green ink in vaguely continental shapes (I used memento teardrop shaped ink pads - the pointed tips are excellent for selective inking techniques) and then stamped it over the blue - OK, so it's not going to win me any geography prizes, but it gets the point across!   I die cut the globe using the matching dies and added it to a plain white panel onto which I had stamped and embossed the "peace on earth" sentiment in silver.

I wanted a little something extra, so added one of the doves from Mama Elephant's Peace on Earth set with a little olive sprig in his beak to tie the colours together on either side of the image.  The mat is silver mirri - even though in the rubbish light it looks black!

Hope that inspires you to look at what you can do with your stamps to make them do more for you.

World Cardmaking Day Prizes

It's Tara today, interrupting Colouring Week as I swapped days with Julia so I could bring you a little something special for World Card Making Day!   Julia will be back to finish off colouring week in style tomorrow with a great video for you too.   This is going to be a long post - so grab a cuppa and make sure your read all the way to the end or you might miss a chance for a prize!

Firstly - I've been having a play with the gorgeous new stamps and dies from Paper Smooches which arrived in store yesterday and made a couple of cards with inking backgrounds as my theme.

For my first card I used the super cute Reindeer from A Holy Holiday which is FULL of useful and cute Christmas sentiments too.   I used distress inks to blend the background and went old-school with a toothbrush and my finger to make the snow.  I created a hill with the Lawn Fawn border set which is currently out of stock but will be back soon I promise and then stamped the Reindeer over the top of both layers in black.  His nose is just a big blob of stickles and then I tied the colours together by stamping the sentiment in two colours and going over the merry with a red glitter pen.

For my second card I did another blended background, spritz with water with gold mica in it but this time my silhouette came in the form of Bethlehem using the new Cityscape 1 Die with yellow card behind the windows.   The sentiment is from A Holy Holiday again and the star is from A Blessed Christmas which is again packed full of useful little stamps.

So that's my playtime over - hope you like them!
